Redding Opportunity Center

Siskiyou Opportunity Center is one of many companies throughout the country that provide vocational training and independence to individuals with developmental disabilities. While we are unique in that we are the only such provider in Siskiyou County, we are very proud to announce that in June of 2023, SOC expanded to Shasta County!

In February 2023, the Shasta County Board of Supervisors voted to close the Shasta County Opportunity Center after 60 years, leaving nearly 100 developmentally disabled adults uncertain about their financial futures. These clients included nearly 30 clients at the Redding Transfer Station alone. Most of these clients work full-time, live independently, and would be devastated (emotionally and financially) if they lost their jobs. In addition, the recycling program at Redding Transfer would have had to shut down until adequately staffed, potentially creating major consequences for the City of Redding’s waste management program.

Concerned for the wellbeing of these and other janitorial clients, two dedicated staff members at Far Northern Regional Center reached out to SOC as soon as they heard the news, in hopes that these clients’ jobs and livelihoods could be saved. SOC's Executive Director worked closely with FNRC and staff at the City of Redding to coordinate the client referrals, staff recruitment, and contract negotiations to create a seamless transition for our new clients.

In total, Siskiyou Opportunity Center saved the jobs of over 50 clients in Shasta County, expanding our mission of providing support services to individuals with disabilities to obtain and earned income, function independently, and maximize their highest level of vocational potential.

Our hope in the future is to provide a day program for lower functioning adults who need assistance in educational activities and social outings that they may not otherwise have access to.
